Home to the
Worlds Famous Beach Copacabana
By: Douglas Scott
Rio de Janeiro River of January is a
major city in south eastern Brazil and the capital of the
state of Rio de Janeiro. The city was once the capital of
Brazil. It is one of the most violent cities of the world
around 80 victims are killed every week in assaults, stray
bullets and narco terrorism.
Rio de Janeiro sitting on the southern
shore of a landlocked harbour in the brilliant setting of
Guanabara Bay between beautiful seas and jungle covered
mountains. Rio is the home of the most famous beach in the
world Copacabana and the world's biggest carnival.
Rio's beaches are undoubtedly one of
the main reasons why travelers visit the city. Ipanema and
Copacabana are by far the most famous, but there are many
others, each with a distinct character. Travelers’ should be
aware that most beaches are polluted, and bathing is not
advisable in any of the non-oceanic beaches except for those
in the island of Paqueta.
The city has a vibrant music and arts
scene, classical music, opera, open-air bars art-house
cinema, laidback jazz, chorinho spots over-the-top samba
clubs and throbbing nightclubs.
The main reason for visiting Rio seems
to be the Carnival. This highly advertised party lasts for
almost two weeks and it is well known for the escolas de
samba that parade in Centro, on a gigantic structure called
Sambodromo. During Carnival, the city has much more to offer
though, with the blocos de rua, that parade on the streets.
There are now hundreds of these street samba blocks, that
parade almost in every neighborhood, especially in Centro
and the South Zone, gathering thousands of people.
Rio hosts the country's largest and
most popular New Years Eve celebrations. The huge fireworks
display and music shows attract two million people to the
sands of Copacabana beach every year. People dress in white
for luck and toast the arrival of the new year.
The main shopping streets are Avenida
Nossa Senhora de Copacabana and Rua Barata Ribeiro in
Copacabana, Rua Visconde de Piraja in Ipanema and in Avenida
Ataulfo de Paiva in Leblon. Rio has over 30 shopping centers
located throughout the city.
Sugar Loaf Mountain is an attraction of
Rio. The top of this mountain is an impressive 1300-feet
above sea level and offers a spectacular view of Guanabara
Bay and the city. Cable cars take visitors up the mountain
in two stages, stopping on the way to the summit at Morro da
Urca.
